2013 Women in Business Annual Conference
In September 2013, the 8th Annual Women in Business Conference took place at the Holiday Inn Sydney Waterfront. The theme for this conference was ‘Women Mean Business: Strength, Confidence, Leadership.’ The Cape Breton Small Business Development Program was delighted to present an agenda that benefited women in Cape Breton who were currently in business and those who may be considering becoming an entrepreneur. The conference agenda includes a Gala Awards Dinner hosted by Bette MacDonald recognizing the many successful women who have established themselves and their businesses on our island. The luncheon address was delivered by Nora Duke, President and CEO of Fortis Properties. In 2010, Ms. Duke was named one of Canada’s Most Powerful Women by the Women’s Executive Network.
Panel discussions were focused on the topics of Building Your Business; Marketing; Health and Wellness; Just the Facts (legal, accounting and insurance requirements for business); and the Tough Topics: Human Resources, Difficult Conversations, and Stepping Up to Leadership. The conference concluded with participants discussing the strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats to business in Cape Breton. This SWOT analysis allowed participants to identify what works well from an economic perspective and what needs work. Business opportunities were identified as a result of the discussion. Local entrepreneurs were also given the opportunity to take part in the Trade Show, featuring products that could be purchased throughout the day. The Women in Business Conference will continue to provide a venue for learning and networking as well as the celebration of women entrepreneurs.
